Kenneth Owens Obituary

Kenneth "Ken" Owens, a cherished family member, decorated veteran, and world traveler, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on August 11, 1929 in Geneva County, Alabama, Ken's life was marked by dedication, service, and an adventurous spirit that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Ken was a pillar of strength and kindness, standing as a loving husband to his late wife, Shirley Nelson Owens, for 72 years, and a nurturing father to his sons, the late Ricky "Rick" Owens and David "Dave" Owens. He leaves behind his brother, Ray Owens; his sisters, Jean Owens Alexander (Andy) and Ginger Owens Washchek; his nephew, Ron (Donna) Ward who cared for Ken in his later years; and a host of several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felmer and Cathryn Owens; his sisters, Jane Owens Ward and Billy Owens Knight.

Ken's commitment to his country was unwavering. His military career began with the Army and continued with the Air Force, where he served with distinction for 20 years at Luke Air Force Base. His dedication as a flight engineer earned him the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and recognition with a Bronze Star for his valor in Vietnam. Ken's strategic acumen was further exemplified through his involvement with the Strategic Air Command.

After his honorable service in the military, Ken transitioned to the civilian aviation sector, bringing his expertise to Republic and Bonanza Airlines, followed by Air West- Howard Hughes. His work ethic and organizational skills were unparalleled, shaping a career that was as rewarding as it was inspiring.

Ken's interests were as vast as the globe he traversed. A true renaissance man, he visited every continent and nearly every country in the world, a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for exploration. Despite his extensive travels, Ken remained grounded in his values, known for being a hard worker, tech-savvy, and exceptionally kind-hearted.

In 2022, following the passing of his beloved wife, Shirley, Ken moved to Dothan, where he quickly grew to love the lush greenery and warm community. This new chapter allowed him to stay close to his family, whom he adored above all else.

Those who knew Ken would describe him as loving, kind, and courageous. His presence was a source of comfort and joy, and his actions always spoke louder than words. He nurtured his relationships with the same care and attention to detail that he applied to every aspect of his life.

Ken Owens' journey on earth may have come to an end, but his spirit continues to soar in the hearts of those he touched. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose, love, and the courage to face each new day with optimism and strength. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will forever be cherished by his family and the many lives he influenced.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers at Anointed Touch.
