Alma Celestine Boykin Colvin

June 2, 1933 — August 9, 2021

Alma Celestine Boykin Colvin, a strong and compassionate woman, peacefully departed this life on Monday, August 9, 2021 at her home in Dothan.

Born in Ozark, on June 2, 1933, she was the only child born to the union of the late Lessie Bell (Richardson) Lewis and the late Quincy Boykin. Educated in the public schools of Ozark, AL, Newark, NJ and Canton, OH, she earned degrees from Tuskegee University and Troy University.

On June 1, 1957, she married Thomas Colvin, Jr. To this union three children were born: Leslye, Thomas III, and Angela. A lifelong Christian, she and her family joined St. Columba Catholic Church in the 1960s where she served in several ministries. A tireless volunteer, she was involved with many parish and community efforts. In addition to training countless volunteers for Catholic Social Services, she also served on the Board of the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center, and was an associate of the Missionary Cenacle Apostolate (MCA). There are too many other organizations to identify individually, but she was committed to each.

She began her career teaching for Tallassee Public Schools and retired from Dothan City Schools after educating students for more than three decades. She then supervised student teachers for several years at Troy University in Dothan. In her retirement, this loving and devoted family woman enjoyed being a grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Colvin, Jr.; and her parents, Lessie Bell Lewis of Canton, OH, and Quincy Boykin of Atlanta, GA. Those blessed to cherish memories of her include three children, Leslye Alise Colvin of Dothan, Thomas Colvin, III of Dothan, and Angela Denise Colvin-Burque of Auburn, AL; three grandchildren, Brittany Nekayah Colvin Danner of Birmingham, AL, Joseph Thomas Burque of Auburn, AL, and Andrew Daniel Burque of Auburn, AL; three great-grandchildren, Kaylex Mariyah Danner; Arielle Rie' Danner, and Jonathan Tyrone Danner II. She also leaves behind one brother, Chris Jackson (Toretha), two sisters, Renee Matthews of Birmingham, and Paulette (Willie) Love of Ozark; one sister-in-law, Florine Colvin of Ozark and one brother-in-law, Melvin Loman of Hopewell, VA, several special cousins including Loretta Boykin, Bea Lewis, Annette Long, and Ann Parker, all of Ozark; Mary Lee Richardson Scott of Canton, OH, and a host of nieces, nephews and other cousins.

Because of the pandemic, the family had a private Mass of Christian Burial at St. Columba Catholic Church with Father Jim Dye officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park with Andrew Byrd directing.
