Amelia Brookins Whittaker

Amelia Brookins Whittaker, a resident of Donalsonville, GA, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017. She was 79.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Donalsonville Church of Christ. Interment will follow in Friendship Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 10-11 am Eastern Standard Time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the ASPCA, PO Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929 or to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111.

Amelia was a lifelong resident of Donalsonville, Georgia. She was born in Henry County, Alabama on November 1, 1937, but soon her family relocated to Seminole County, Georgia. She was the oldest daughter of Herman L. Brookins and Niza Newberry Brookins.

Amelia was a graduate of Seminole County High School and spent many years at Whittaker Insurance Agency in Donalsonville, Georgia. She was a member of Donalsonville Church of Christ.

Amelia enjoyed cooking, golfing, and spending time with family. She was known as an expert cook of Southern Cuisine, cakes of all kinds, and cat-head biscuits. She was an avid golfer, with a hole-in-one to her credit. She was a caring wife, mother, and grandmother. Friends and family were always welcome at her dinner table.

Amelia was preceded in death by her husband, Mainous Whittaker and her parents, Herman and Niza Brookins and by her sister, Helen Dick.

Survivors include her children, Dawn W. (Andy) Dallas, Greg M. (Shawn) Whittaker, Howard K. (Sharon) Whittaker, and Paul D. (Aimee) Whittaker, her 7 grandchildren; her brothers, Chris (Barbara) Brookins and Herman (Nina) Brookins.
