Ann Greenway Hassell

May 2, 1927 — July 19, 2015

Ann Greenway Bain Hassell, 88, a resident of Dothan passed away Sunday July 19, 2015 at a local nursing facility.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday July 25, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Wingate. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hassell was born on May 2, 1927 in Petersburg Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia to the late Willis R. Bain and Susie Chieves Smith Bain. She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1945 and from Stratford College in Danville, Virginia in 1947 and later graduated from Pan American Business College in Richmond, Virginia. Following graduation, Ann took a six-week trip to Europe. She sailed from New York on the ocean liner Queen Mary and returned home on the Queen Elizabeth. She married John N. Hassell on December 10, 1949 at Ann’s parents’ house in Petersburg, Virginia. Ann loved to travel. She traveled extensively throughout Europe including Italy, France, Switzerland, Monaco, Germany, East Germany, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Luxemburg. She also traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting 30 of the 50 states. She also traveled throughout the islands of the Caribbean on numerous occasions with her daughter, Deborah. Ann also loved art. One of her favorite places was the Uffizi Art Gallery in Florence, Italy. Ann loved music, growing up with the music of the “Big Bands” of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Some of her fondest memories were of live performances of bands that were popular at that time. Ann enjoyed these performances during her visits to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Ann lived in numerous places following the career of a military husband including Petersburg, VA, Ogden, UT, Germany, Springfield, VA, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Lathrop, CA, Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, and Dothan, AL from 1978-2015. She was a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. She worked as licensed Alabama real estate agent, various volunteer work, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Dothan.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother and sister, Willis R. Bain, Jr. and Patricia Bain Ridout.

Survivors include her husband COL John Nelson Hassell U.S. Army Ret; her children, Deborah Rives Clement Corbiell Hassell-Corbiell, Dr. Timothy Bain Ruth Ann Hassell and Edward "Ned" Carolyn A. Cotta Hassell; a grandson Myles Allen Hassell.
