April Sherree Smith

May 31, 1977 — October 10, 2024

April Smith, a beacon of love and laughter, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024, in Arab,, Alabama, at the age of 47. Born on May 31, 1977, in Montgomery, Alabama, April's vibrant spirit and infectious humor touched the lives of everyone she met.

April's early years were spent in the heart of Alabama where she grew up surrounded by the love of her family. She was the cherished daughter of Mike and Angie Leonard, who instilled in her the values of kindness and compassion that she carried throughout her life. April was a proud graduate of Cottonwood High School's class of 1995, and she furthered her education with courses at Wallace Community College. Her academic journey was a testament to her belief in lifelong learning and personal growth.

After her formal education, April found her calling in helping animals in need. She dedicated her time and energy to the SOS Animal Shelter in Enterprise, where she worked tirelessly to ensure that every animal received the love and care they deserved. April's colleagues and the animals she cared for became an extended family, one that she spoke of with immense pride and affection.

April made her home in Ozark, Alabama, where she was a well-known figure in the community. Not only was she recognized for her work with animals, but also for her musical talents. She played in the band at Ashford, sharing her passion for music with others. Just a few months ago, April made the move to Guntersville, Alabama, where she quickly became a beloved member of the local community.

Despite facing the challenges of disability and depression, April's resilience and dry sense of humor never waned.

She was a self-proclaimed jokester and tomboy, always ready with a witty quip to lighten the mood. April was an Auburn football fan, and her enthusiasm for the game was infectious. At home, she was a true homebody, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her love for shoes was legendary, and she always made sure her hair was impeccably styled, adding to her unique and vibrant persona.

April's family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her loving parents, Mike and Angie Leonard; her adored furbaby, Happy; her grandmother, Wynell Leonard; her sister, Kristin (Leonard) Boutwell; her aunts, Lynda "Auntie L" McLendon and Billie Faye Ray; her nephews, Parker Boutwell and Easton Wiggins; and a host of cousins, friends, and family members who will miss her dearly.

Even though she was known to be accident-prone, April's spirit remained unbreakable. She navigated life's hurdles with grace and a smile, always ready to share a laugh or lend an ear. Those who knew her will remember April as a loving and funny individual, whose presence brought warmth and joy to any occasion.

April's legacy is one of love and laughter, of kindness and care. Her impact on the world around her was profound, and she will be remembered for the happiness she brought into the lives of others. Her memory will live on in the stories shared, the jokes retold, and the countless lives she touched with her generous heart.
