Arthur Phillips

CW4 Arthur F. Phillips, USA, Ret., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on June 19, 2024, at the age of 86 in Ozark, Alabama, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on November 24, 1937, in Alabama, Arthur's life was marked by dedication, generosity, and an unwavering spirit that touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Arthur, known affectionately as Art by his loved ones, was a man of remarkable character and integrity. He was a dedicated family man, deeply in love with his wife, Sandra Phillips, and a guiding light to his children, Tom Phillips (and wife Claire), Anita (Leigh) Phillips, Jonathan Payne, and daughter Jennifer Illig. His grandchildren, Marie Phillips, Jeremy Illig, and Romina Illig held a special place in his heart. Arthur is also survived by his brother, Robert Paul Phillips, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Betty Phillips, his grandchild, Robert Allen Phillips, by his sister, Ann Phillips Ealum, and by his first wife of 42 years, Ilona Phillips.

Arthur's life was one of service and adventure. He joined the US Army as a young man and proudly served for 26 years, retiring as a pilot. His passion for flying was a testament to his love for the skies, and he continued to fly until he was grounded due to heart issues. His military career was not just a job but a calling, and he carried the discipline and respect he learned in the Army throughout his life.

In his personal life, Arthur was known as the life of the party. He had a magnetic personality that drew people to him, and his down-to-earth, level-headed nature earned him respect from everyone. Arthur's love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies, which included boating, deep-sea fishing, and trout fishing in Arkansas. He also enjoyed hunting and took great pleasure in the tranquility of nature.

Arthur's belief in the value of hard work was something he instilled in his children, always encouraging them to "be the best you can be." His example of hard work and dedication was a cornerstone of his legacy. He was generous in sharing his knowledge and experiences, always ready to lend a helping hand or a word of advice.

Friends and family will gather to honor and remember Arthur at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel from 12-2 pm on Sunday, June 23, 2024. A man of honor, Arthur will be laid to rest the following Sunday, June 30, 2024, at 2:00pm at Sunset Memorial Park, with military honors taking place before his interment at Pinckard Memorial Cemetery.

Arthur's life can be encapsulated by the words generous, friendly, and courageous. He lived by the well-known quote, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear," attributed to James Neil Hollingworth. This belief was evident in the way he faced life's challenges, including his final battle with cancer.

Arthur F. Phillips will be remembered not only for the life he led but also for the lives he touched. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him. He was a true gentleman, a loyal friend, and an American hero whose memory will be cherished forever.
