October 12, 1955 — October 5, 2019

Astrid "Tummie" Maria Bayhi, a resident of Daleville, Alabama, passed away on October 5, 2019 at her home. She was 63. Astrid was born in Bussum, Netherlands on October 12, 1955 to the late Cyril and Astrid (Wortel) Bayhi. She was the oldest of five children. Her childhood took her throughout Europe, from Spain, to France, and to Germany. While in Holland, she received her Bachelor's in Education and taught school for a few years. Later, her father was transferred to Fort Rucker, Alabama with the Army civil service and her family moved to the Daleville area. She left her career as a teacher in Holland but decided to go back to school. She attended Wallace Community College and received her nursing degree as an LPN and later as an RN. During her 28-year career, Astrid worked at Flowers Hospital, Southeast Alabama Medical Center, Enterprise Medical Center, and Enterprise Health and Rehab. She primarily worked in the ICU and she served her patients and staff as a charge nurse, nurse manager, and supervisor. She loved nursing, taking care of her patients, and comforting families. She retired from nursing in 2008. Tummie was known for her strong faith and was active in her church, Triumphant Cross Lutheran in Dothan, Alabama. On September 19, 1996, Tummie married the love of her life, Jeanne Meile of Baltimore, Maryland. Together they raised their son, Phillip, in a caring and loving home. She was not only a proud mother to Phillip, but a loving "Oma" to her two grandchildren, with whom she loved sharing her natural talents in crafts and music. She was also known as "Tante Tum" to her nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was a humble, loving, and creative spirit and dearly loved by family, friends, and co-workers. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her wife of 23 years, Jeanne Meile; her son, Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Newman (USAF) and his wife Jessica; her two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Henry Newman, and her special K-9 friend and companion, Moses. Tummie is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Edward and Cyril. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church.
