Barbara Nell Mathison

October 18, 1953 — July 2, 2024

Barbara Mathison, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, following an extended illness. Born on October 18, 1953, in Tampa, Florida, Barbara's zest for life and her strong, vibrant personality left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.

Barbara spent her formative years in Florida, where she developed a lifelong love for the beach and the outdoors. After graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in Accounting, she embarked on a successful 15-year career as an accountant in Atlanta, Georgia. Her intelligence and keen eye for detail made her a respected professional in her field. Later, Barbara's adventurous spirit led her to a new chapter as a Real Estate agent in Washington, before eventually settling in Dothan in 2007.

Her 40-year marriage to George B. Mathison, III was one filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Together, they navigated the joys and challenges of life. Barbara was a devoted mother to her daughter Tawnya (Mike) O'Neill, and a stepmother to Charlie (Renata) Mathison and Cayce (Eric) Rabel. Her grandchildren, Spencer and Brenden O'Neill, along with step-grandchildren Patrick and Graycen Rabel, were the lights of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She also leaves behind her aunt, Carol (Marshall) McCommons.

Barbara's passions were as varied as they were fulfilling. An avid reader and gardener, she found solace in the pages of books and the beauty of nature. Her adventurous soul was never satisfied with the familiar, leading her to travel extensively, particularly to her favorite destinations like South Island, Hawaiian Island, New is Zealand, and Grand Cayman Island. A dedicated Florida Gator fan, she held season tickets for 25 years, a testament to her unwavering support and enthusiasm for her team.

Her friendships were lifelong and deep, especially with her special friends since second grade, Johnnie (Ronnie) Harrison. Barbara's two fur baby companions, Gabby and Rexall, were also a source of joy and comfort throughout her life.

Barbara was known for her fun-loving nature and her infectious laugh. She had a strong personality, always standing firm in her beliefs and values. Her capacity for love was boundless, and she was always there to offer support and guidance to her family and friends.

Barbara Mathison's legacy is one of love, adventure, and intelligence. She lived her life with a sense of purpose and joy that inspired those around her. As we say goodbye, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the extraordinary life she led. Barbara will be profoundly missed but her spirit will continue to guide and uplift us.
