Betty Jean (Walters) Branton

October 16, 1931 — August 22, 2023

Dothan

Betty Jean Branton, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2023 in Dothan, Alabama, after an extended illness. Born on October 16, 1931 in Graceville, Florida to Quincy and Audie Mae Eldridge, Betty was a beacon of love, gentleness, and humor throughout her 91 years of life.

Growing up as the next to the youngest of five siblings in Graceville, Betty was a bright and diligent student who graduated from Houston County High School. Her commitment to learning and hard work set a strong foundation for her future career. She was a dedicated employee who spent 15 years with Michelin and also worked with Burlington Hosiery Mill and TRW on Napier Field Road.

Betty was not only hardworking but also a passionate individual who had a keen interest in fashion. Always looking her best when she stepped out of the house, she had an elegant flair that was admired by many. She loved to take long walks, observing the world around her, and had a knack for making people laugh with her witty humor. She was a devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church and Rehobeth Baptist Church, where she was loved by the congregation.

Betty was a loving wife to her late husband, James Edwin Branton, and a devoted mother to her sons Danny (Charlotte) W. Branton and Jeff L. Branton. Her joy was multiplied by her grandchildren, Mary Katherine Branton-Housley and Christina Head, and their spouses Simon and Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents, Quincy and Audie Mae Eldridge Walters, and her siblings James L. Walters, Jeanette Davis, Quincy Walters Jr., and Jimmy Walters. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Edwina Howerton, and will be deeply missed by her special friends, Laura Taylor, Emily, Brunetta Brannon and special caregivers, Veronica Ward Hazel David, and Virginia Jones.

In the words of Helen Keller, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Betty was a beautiful soul who touched the hearts of many with her love, gentleness, and humor. She was not just a woman of great strength and resilience, but also a beacon of love and warmth to all who knew her.

A celebration of Betty's life will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ricky Plummer officiating. Betty will be laid to rest in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 3-4 pm.
