Betty Ann Gregory, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by her cherished family on November 19, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida. Born on May 8, 1934, in Winston County, Mississippi, Betty Ann was the eldest of three children. She grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she forged a deep connection to her Mississippi roots during her formative summers spent with her aunt and uncle.
Betty Ann's life was marked by devotion. In 1957, she married the love of her life, Dick Gregory, whom she met while he was a student at the University of Alabama. Together, they built a life in Dothan, Alabama, raising four children, Lisa, Forrester, Laura, and Hank. Betty Ann's home was a testament to her big heart—a place where everyone was always welcome.
Betty Ann lived in Dothan for 67 years, and was a proud member of First Baptist Church the entire time. She loved the many, many friends she made in Dothan. She was always ready to cook for those in need or to simply share the joy of good food with friends and family. As one of her grandchildren said, “Gigi sure is a good cooker!”
Betty Ann's adventurous spirit shone through in her love for travel, reading, and playing bridge. She explored the world with her "travel group," creating a tapestry of memories that she would lovingly recount. Her Mississippi heritage remained a source of pride throughout her life, and she often shared stories of her childhood that captivated and inspired her grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Lois Baker, her beloved husband, Dick, who passed in 1990, her beloved son, Hank Gregory, who passed away in 2011, and her brother, Eddie Baker, who died in February of this year. Betty Ann's legacy is carried on by those she leaves behind. She is survived by her loving children, Lisa Fuller (Russell), Forrester Gregory, and Laura Kennington (Brad); her daughter-in-law, Chrissy King (Joe); her sister that she loved like her own child, Ivy Lake; and her sister-in-law, Dottie Richardson (EC), who was like a real sister to her. Betty Ann was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Chase Fuller (Kayleigh), Kelsey Clem (Taylor), Richard Fuller (Jamie), Kyle Kennington (Mackenzie), Taylor Cordeiro (Michael), Devon Gregory (Bekah), Gage Gregory, and Ansley Gregory. Her joy was multiplied with the arrival of each of her ten great-grandchildren: Scotland Clem, Ryker Clem, Merritt Fuller, Margot Fuller, Martie Fuller, Levi Gregory, Miller Gregory, Stevie Kennington, Lily Lazar, and Kiera Lazar.
Loving, adventurous, and faith-filled are words that only begin to capture the essence of Betty Ann Gregory. She was witty, a loving soul, and a social butterfly who cherished her friends as if they were family. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, the strength of faith, and the boundless capacity of the human heart to give and receive love.
Betty Ann lived a full life and was loved by so many. Her memory will continue to be a guiding light for her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Betty Ann Gregory's story is one of love, family, and the beauty of a life well-lived. She will be profoundly missed but her spirit will remain an indelible part of the lives she touched.
A celebration of Betty Ann's life will be held Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 2pm in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary in Dothan, Alabama with Dr. Taylor Rutland officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. Betty Ann will be laid to rest next to her adored husband, Dick, in the Dothan City Cemetery. Donations may be made in Betty Ann’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Dothan.
