Betty Jean Baker, affectionately known as Jean to her friends and as Nana to her family, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on October 2, 1940, in Hail County, Alabama, Jean was a true Southern lady whose warmth and generosity touched everyone she knew.
Jean spent her childhood in Hail County, where she developed a love for the simple joys of life. She married her beloved husband, Roy Ivan Baker, Jr., known to all as "Sonny," and together they built a life filled with love and shared interests. Jean was a cherished member of the community and a proud Lady of the Nile, embodying the organization's values of kindness and philanthropy. She was also an avid Alabama Football Fan, “Roll Tide.”
A master in the kitchen, Jean was renowned for her pecan pie and dressing, recipes that will be passed down for generations. Her love for Southern cooking was only surpassed by her love for her family. She cared for her home and family fiercely above all else. Jean enjoyed fishing and singing, often combining the two during family outings, creating memories that her family will treasure forever.
Left to honor Jean's legacy are her daughters, Jeri Roshenne Weaver (Larry), Diania Darlene Perez (Tomas), and Rebecca Whitney Calhoon (Todd). Her many grandchildren, will miss her deeply, remembering her as their loving "Nana." Jean's joyous spirit will also live on through her many loved ones who were blessed to know her. She also leaves behind her loving sister, Dorothy Evelyn Fischer.
Jean's life was a testament to the power of selfless love. She believed strongly in the importance of family, and she dedicated herself to building a solid foundation upon which her loved ones could thrive. Her favorite saying, "See ya, Love ya, Bye," encapsulated her approach to life—a constant affirmation of her affection and a reminder of her unwavering support.
Her husband, Sonny, predeceased her, but the love they shared continues to inspire those who were fortunate to witness it. Their partnership was a beacon of devotion and mutual respect, setting a beautiful example for their children and grandchildren. Her husband, parents, and several of her siblings welcomed Jean into heaven with open arms.
Jean leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She will be remembered for her selfless nature, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her ability to light up a room with her smile and her unwavering commitment to her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
As we bid farewell to Betty Jean Baker, we celebrate a life lived with grace, compassion, and an abundance of love. Her spirit will continue to guide us, and her memory will remain in our hearts forever. We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace, and we honor her by living out the values she held so dear.

A celebration of Jean’s life was held on November 3, 2024 at 1:00pm in the Sunset Chapel with Rev. Charles Goldsmith officiating. Jean was laid to rest next to her loving husband in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Pallbearers included, Dillian Smith, Brantley Arnold, Jason Walsh, Todd Calhoon, Patricio Perez, Larry Weaver, and Josh Edwards.
