Betty Jane Smith

Betty Jane Smith, a resident of Ozark, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020. She was 93. A memorial service will be held at 11am Friday, January 31, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Park, Midland City, Alabama. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service. A private interment will be held at a later date at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Alabama where she will join her husband in eternal rest. Betty Jane Smith (Swinehart) was born April 23, 1926 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania the first of three children of Frank A. and Beulah G. Swinehart (Wolfe). She attended and graduated high school in Lock Haven. In 1946 she married Morris B. Smith Jr., her high school sweetheart. They were married for 48 years until his death in 1994. As a military wife, Betty followed her husband to many duty stations over the next 24 years as she made each location a loving home. After her husband's retirement from the military they traveled and worked together overseas before returning to the US and settling in Dothan, Alabama, eventually making their home in Ozark. Betty enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles and cooking. Betty J. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Morris B. Smith Jr., brother, Frank A. Swinehart Jr., and sister, Ruby Eyer. Survivors include two sons, Lynn B. (Nikki) Smith and Gerald G. (Brenda) Smith, and daughter, Mary Ellen Smith-Miller; 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Oak View Manor Nursing Home in Ozark, Alabama for the care and comfort provided to Betty and the family. A memorial service will be held at 11am Friday, January 31, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Park, Midland City, Alabama. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service. A private interment will be held at a later date at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Alabama where she will join her husband in eternal rest.
