Beverly Owens

January 21, 1961 — November 29, 2023

Beverly Lois Owens, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023, in Elba, Alabama. Born on January 21, 1961, in Washington, Beverly was a beacon of love and laughter throughout her 62 years of life, touching the hearts of everyone she met with her selfless and loving nature.

Beverly's early years were spent in the nurturing care of her mother, Delores Ratcliffe, and her late father, Michael Ratcliffe. She grew up alongside her brother Thomas and sister Erika, forming a close-knit family bond that would last a lifetime. Beverly's joy multiplied with the birth of her sons, Timothy "Nic" Shirley (Megan Jones), and "Charles" Winfred Shirley III, with his wife Jennifer. Her love and legacy continued to flourish with the arrival of her beloved grandchildren, Kira Thomas, Christian, Colson, John "J," Rhenn, and Charlie-Mae, who affectionately called her Nana or Grammy.

Beverly's dedication to children extended beyond her family as she served as a substitute teacher at Daleville City Schools. Her nurturing spirit led her to open an at-home daycare, where she provided care and guidance for 26 years until her retirement. Beverly's impact on the lives of countless children and families in her community was profound and enduring.

A woman of faith, Beverly attended Daleville Assembly of God and later found spiritual solace at Goodwater Freewill Baptist Church. Her involvement in church activities and her unwavering belief were sources of strength and inspiration not only for herself but also for those around her.

Beverly's interests and talents were as diverse as they were delightful. She was an avid card player, with canasta and rummy being among her favorite games. Her sense of fun and camaraderie made her a sought-after partner and opponent. Beverly's love for arts and crafts showcased her creativity and skill, as she crafted beautiful pieces that were cherished by all who received them. Her popcorn wreaths were a sight to behold and a delicious delight, passing down through her children to their children as a cherished memory of her. It remains a highly anticipated treat at family gatherings, promising to bring joy for generations to come.

A woman with a zest for life, Beverly had a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature, exemplified by her love for butterflies and lighthouses. She also enjoyed music, which brought her joy and often served as the backdrop to her daily life. Beverly's involvement in the PTA during her children's school years reflected her commitment to education and community.

Beverly's sense of humor was as infectious as it was endearing. She had the remarkable ability to light up a room with her wit and warmth, ensuring that laughter was never in short supply. Her funny anecdotes and playful jokes will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.

Beverly's life was a testament to the power of love and the joy of giving. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we take solace in knowing that her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Rest in peace, Beverly Lois Owens, for your journey was one of purpose, grace, and boundless love.
