Cecil Laverne Condrey

Rev. Cecil Laverne Condrey, affectionately known as Cecil by his loved ones, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 84. Born on February 18, 1940, Cecil's journey through life was marked by his selfless nature, unwavering faith, and a boundless love for his family and community.

Cecil's early life was shaped by his education at Midland City High School, where he graduated in 1958. He furthered his studies at Wallace State Community College, setting a foundation for his dedication to lifelong learning and service. Cecil's commitment to his country was evident as he honorably served in the Marine Corps from 1958 to 1970, including a tour in Vietnam. His bravery was recognized through numerous military achievement awards. After his military service, Cecil transitioned to a career in aviation, where he excelled as a supervisor at Hayes International for over a decade.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Rev. Cecil Condrey found his true calling as the pastor of Grimes Community Church. His ministry touched countless lives, as he led his congregation with a faith-filled heart and an open door. Cecil's compassionate spirit and ability to connect with people of all walks of life made him a beloved figure within the church and the broader community.

Cecil's passion for life extended to his many interests. Known as a jokester with an infectious sense of humor, he could light up any room he entered. A free spirit, Cecil lived life with purpose and joy. He was a devoted Alabama football fan, whose enthusiasm for his team was matched only by his love for the Lord. His patriotic spirit was evident in every aspect of his life, from his military service to his deep appreciation for his country.

Family was the cornerstone of Cecil's world. He was a loving husband to his wife, Willa Dean Condrey, and a guiding light to his children, Cecil Karl Condrey (Heidi), Scottie Jernigan (Christie), Wesley Condrey, Mark Lane Condrey (Loraine), and Lisa Renae Chapman (James John). His legacy lives on through his adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who will remember him as the embodiment of love and strength.

Cecil's sisters, Nancy (Steve) Condrey Harris and Sallie (John) Condrey McCullough, will cherish the memories of their brother's unwavering support and the laughter they shared. He is also remembered fondly by his stepchildren: Tony Johnson, Wanda Chesnut, Margie (Jimmie) Miller, Angie (Richard) Gibson, and the late Carey Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Bernard Condrey and Clara Mae Condrey, as well as his siblings, Annette Condrey Palmer, Annie Myrle Condrey Hathcock, Brenda Condrey, and William Lee "Bill" Condrey. Cecil’s loving spirit will continue to resonate within his family and all who knew him.

An avid outdoorsman, Cecil found peace in fishing and camping, often surrounded by the beauty of nature. His love for reading provided him with a wealth of knowledge and a quiet refuge. Cecil also dedicated time to coaching Dixie Youth Little League Baseball, where he encouraged young athletes to pursue their dreams with vigor and sportsmanship. His competitive spirit found an outlet in bowling and golfing, activities he enjoyed with friends and family.

Rev. Cecil Laverne Condrey will be remembered as a man of great integrity, whose life was a testament to the values he held dear. His selfless acts, faith-filled existence, and loving demeanor will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Cecil's story is one of a life well-lived, marked by devotion to God, country, and family. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we take solace in knowing that his spirit remains a guiding light in the lives of all he touched.

A celebration of Cecil’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 12:00pm in the Sunset Memorial Park Chapel with Rev. Haley Enfinger officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Military honors and burial to follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Robert Strickland, Robert Murray, Clifford Mott, Leon Minor, Bub Murray, Jimmie Miller, Tim Dickerson, and Andy Farnham will be serving as pallbearers.
