Charles Edwin Maddox, a resident of Dothan went from his temporary home to his eternal home early Sunday morning. He was 77.
Funeral services will be held 11 am Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Dothan with Dr. Johnny Fain officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial donation to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, 1314 Westgate Pkwy., Suite 2, Dothan, AL, 36303, or your favorite charity. Charles was born in Covington County on March 29, 1933 to Christopher Columbus “Tump” and Audie Freeman Maddox. He graduated from Covington County High School in 1949 at sixteen years of age. He later joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War in the 417th Engineer Aviation Brigade. After his service in the Army, he attended the University of Alabama where he graduated in 1956 with a B.S. Degree in Accounting from the School of Commerce and Business Administration. While at the University, he met his future wife, Mary Hope Geiger. They were married in 1955 into a union that lasted for over 49 years until her death in 2005. Charles was a Certified Public Accountant with McDaniel and Associates, where he served as managing partner for a number of years. He enjoyed his work and loved the client contact. Many of his clients became lifelong friends. He retired in 2005. Charles was an active member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendant, Church Treasurer, and was a member of the choir. He was honored as Deacon Emeritus in 2009 and was also a lifetime member of the Civitans International. He was an avid golfer and loved Alabama Football.Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Geiger Maddox, his parents, C.C. and Audie Maddox, one brother, Huron Maddox, and one sister, Jean Maddox.Survivors include his four daughters and their husbands, Charla and John McKoy, Vicki and Tony Martin, Laura and Mike Everett, and Melissa and Todd Thornell, all of Dothan; twelve grandchildren, Joel McKoy, Amy McKoy Armstrong Conner, Benjamin and Anna McKoy, Drew and Trent Martin, Ryland, Marshall, Martin, and Carson Everett, and Hayes and Bo Thornell; a great-grandchild on the way, Henry Eric Armstrong; a brother and sister-in-law, Hugh and Virginia Maddox; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Gale Hartzog; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Tallulah and David Snell, and Rebecca and Frank Gregory and several nieces and nephews.Serving as active pallbearers will be his nine grandsons.
