Chester Wright

September 19, 1917 — September 18, 2016

Chester Olander Wright, a resident of Ashford, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016 in the Southeast Alabama Medical Center.  He was 98.

Graveside services will be held at 10 am on Thursday, September 22, 2016 in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Chaplain Jack Wingate officiating and Robert Byrd directing.

Chester was born in Newville, Alabama on September 19, 1917.  He would have celebrated his 99th birthday on Monday.  Chester had a total of four children, three daughters and one son.

Chester joined the United States Army in 1939. After surviving many battles while fighting for this great country overseas during World War II, he retired from the Army in December, 1959 as a Master Sergeant after being awarded a Bronze Star among various other medals. Chester went to work as an auto mechanic in Lawton, Oklahoma for a number of years before moving his wife and two youngest children to Dothan, Alabama where he purchased a Texaco service station. Chester and his son ran the service station for several years until Chester went to work for the City of Dothan as an auto mechanic.

Chester went to work at Ft. Rucker Army base as a supervisor over heavy equipment repair. He retired from Ft. Rucker in October, 1982.  Chester spent most of his time caring for any animal that came along.

Chester is preceded in death by his wife, Edith, who passed away in 2009. He is survived by all four of his children, 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren who will miss him dearly.
