Curtis Clifton Hardy

April 5, 1919 — July 14, 2010

Curtis Clifton Hardy of Dothan , AL went to be with his Lord, on the evening of Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Henry County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Abbeville, AL at the age of 91. The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, July 17, 2010 with Rev. Rick Glenn officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Sunset Funeral Home off Montgomery Highway 231 North. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Gideon’s International, PO Box 5554, Dothan, AL 36302. Mr. Hardy was born on April 5, 1919, in Headland, AL to Clifford McClenny Hardy and Lonnie Jefferson Hardy. Curtis was a World War II Veteran in the Army Air Corps engaged in the Normandy Air Offensive, Northern France Central Europe Offensive and Ardennes Rhineland in Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medal for his contributions in the war. On return from the war, Curtis was employed by the Dothan Hosiery Mill and Sears & Roebuck. He later joined Adams Supply Co. as a salesman and became General Sales Manager and Vice President. After 30 years with Adams Supply, he opened the Heating and Air Conditioning Division of Lewis-Smith Supply in Dothan. He retired in 1984. Curtis touched the lives of old and young alike. He never met a stranger and always put a smile on the faces and in the hearts of everyone he touched. He was very involved in his church family and the ministries of Memphis Baptist Church. He was Sunday School Director for many years, chairman of the Building Committees, Chairman of the Deacon Body and elected Deacon Emeritus in 2004. He and Betty loved working with the senior citizens and traveled extensively with “The Joyful Christians.” He was an active member of Gideon’s International for 20 years. His greatest enjoyment in life was fishing with his retired buddies. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty Casey Hardy and his wife of 3 years, Christine Cunningham Hardy, his brother Oree Hardy, half brothers Lester Hardy and Ernest Hardy and half sister Trudie Mae Adkins. Curtis is survived by his 3 children, Philip Hardy Brenda of Dothan, AL, Peggy Polhemus Russ of Helena, AL and Edwin Hardy Melissa of Dothan, AL; his grandchildren, Brad Hardy, Amy Harrell, David Polhemus, Todd Polhemus Missy, Susan Parsons Nathan, Casey Hardy Jennifer, Grant Hardy, Shannon Ellis, and Rachel Ellis; his great-grandchildren, Jordan Hardy, Jonah Polhemus, Jack Harrell, Isabel Polhemus, and Sloane Hardy; a sister, Mary Ethel Etheridge of Dothan; brothers, Thurman Hardy of Kinsey, AL and L. J. Hardy Dot of Tumbleton, AL; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Active pallbearers will be Kenny Givens, Shelby Womack, Emmit Benton, Charles Ray McCord, Stevie Sizemore, Phillip Pippin, Tom Devine, and Ted Knighton. Honorary pallbearers will be the “Joyful Christians” of Memphis Baptist Church. A special thank you to the Staff of Azalea Court Assisted Living in Headland, AL, Henry County Health and Rehabilitation in Abbeville, AL and Covenant Hospice for their care and love shown to our Pop. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
