Curtis Gullion Poland, known affectionately as Curtis to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 82. Born on December 24, 1941, in Sparta, Kentucky, Curtis was a man of exceptional courage, passion, and intelligence, whose zest for life and work left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
Curtis is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Norma Dean Poland, who has been his steadfast companion through life's many adventures. His legacy continues through his son, Gilbert Mark Poland (Jamie), and his cherished grandchildren, Madison Sivley (Bryant), Annaleigh Poland, and Andrew Poland. His great-grandchild, Summer Jane Sivley, will grow up hearing tales of her great-grandfather's remarkable life. Curtis was predeceased by his brothers, Henry, Clifford, Jack, Arthur, and Tom Poland, and his sisters, Alice Hendren and Bertha Ogden. The memory of his late parents, Jesse Poland and Hallie Berkley Poland, shone brightly in his actions and love for his family. Curtis leaves behind a host of loving nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Curtis's life was characterized by service and a strong work ethic. In 1959, he joined the Army, where he served for three years before joining the Navy. His commitment to his country continued when he transferred to the Air Force in 1967, where he was stationed at several bases stateside and abroad before retiring at Homestead Air Force Base. After a distinguished military career, he retired from the Air Force in 1981, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and honor.
Following his military service, Curtis's industrious spirit led him to work for Florida Power and Light as a nuclear technician until 1988. His entrepreneurial drive flourished as he owned and operated a marina and nursery. He also channeled his talents into construction, building houses, and his skills as a real estate broker. Curtis's connection to the land was evident in his work as a farmer, tending to poultry and managing chicken houses.
In 2004, Curtis and his wife moved from Florida to Dothan, where he quickly became an integral part of the community. For Curtis, work was not just a means to an end but a hobby he relished. His hands were rarely still, as he found joy and purpose in the act of creating and nurturing, whether it was a business, a building, or out on the farm.
Those who knew Curtis will remember him as a man who faced life's challenges with courage. His passion for his endeavors was evident in every project he undertook, and his intelligence shone through in his ability to problem-solve and innovate. Curtis's life was a testament to the power of hard work and the importance of following one's passions. He had a giving nature, and he always wanted to help those in need.
