Donald Howard Gary

August 29, 1943 — May 26, 2024

Dothan

Donald Howard Gary, a man of courage and loving heart, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 80. Born on August 29, 1943, in Ohio, Donald lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family.

Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army for a decade, with one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. His time in the military was distinguished by his role as a Helicopter Technical Inspector, a position that demanded precision and skill. Donald obtained his GED while in the Army and afterwards attended Enterprise Community College where he studied Criminal Justice, demonstrating that it's never too late to embrace new knowledge.

Following his military service, Donald settled in Enterprise, where he began a career as a mechanic. His expertise with vehicles was well-known, and he spent many years driving a wrecker for various dealerships, always ready to lend a hand or a tool. In the 1990s, he moved to Dothan, Alabama, and remained a beloved member of the community until his passing.

Donald met the love of his life, Linda, in a bar, and their ensuing marriage was a testament to their enduring affection and mutual respect. Together, they shared 40 years of laughter, love, and life's simple pleasures. Other survivors include his loving daughter, Donna Gary, and his grandchild, Shelton Myers, who both brought immense joy and pride to Donald's life.

His passions were as humble as he was. In his younger days, Donald enjoyed the freedom of the open road on his motorcycle, feeling the wind and the sun as constant companions. He and Linda cherished their RV camping trips to Panama City Beach and the mountains, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Donald was also a friend to animals; his dogs adored him as much as he adored them. He was a man who loved being outdoors, where he felt most at peace.

Those who knew Donald would describe him as not only courageous and handy but also deeply loving. He was a simple man who found happiness in the presence of those he cared for and in the satisfaction of a day's work well done. As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart." Donald lived by these words, touching the hearts of all who knew him with his genuine kindness and warmth.

A celebration of Donald's life, honoring both the man he was and the service he rendered to his country, will be held at 10 am on Friday, May 31, 2024, in the Sunset Memorial Park Helicopter Pavilion. Brother Charles Goldsmith will officiate the ceremony, which will include military honors, befitting a man of Donald's dedication and valor.

Donald's legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering commitment to his family and country. He will be deeply missed by his wife, daughter, grandchild, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on, not only in the stories shared and the lives he touched but in the very fabric of the community he helped to strengthen and the country he served with such distinction. Rest in peace, Donald Howard Gary; your journey was one well-traveled, and your rest is well-earned.
