Doris Edge Davis

Doris Edge Davis, a resident of Dothan passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at her home. She was 85.

Graveside services will be held 2 pm Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Dr. Jim Sanders officiating and Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral directing. A reception will be held at the Dothan Country Club following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wiregrass Humane Society, First United Methodist Church of Dothan, or your favorite charity.Death doesn’t seem so terrible when you have really lived and tried to live without regrets. Doris Davis, our mother, really lived. She lived as a woman decades ahead of her time. Doris was a successful business woman. She was the owner of one of Dothan’s oldest businesses, Davis Theaters. She loved the young people who worked with her and they loved her. She treated them like they were her own children, corrected them when they were wrong, celebrated their achievements, and would always take time to listen when they needed an ear. She loved her community and believed in giving back to it through civic organizations and service clubs. Doris was born November 19, 1924 in Bainbridge, Georgia and later moved to Marianna, Florida, where she met her future husband, Rufus A. Davis, Jr., her employer. They lived in Memphis, Tennessee for a short time while he was serving in the military, and then returned to Dothan. She devoted her time to family, friends and business for her entire life.She is preceded in death by her husband, Rufus A. Davis, Jr., her beloved grandson, Davis M. Hallford, her parents, Lillie B. Edge and Cecil Edge, her sisters Lois G. Lewis and Vivian G. Sims and her brother Willie Lee Gay.She is survived by her son, Rufus A. Davis, III and wife, Carmie; daughters Marilyn D. Shiver and partner Ken Holland of Fairhope, Alabama and Camille D. Hallford and husband Mike; grandchildren Don and Katie Jordan of Mobile, Alabama, Tessa and Chris Baehr of Spanish Fort, Alabama; great grandchildren, Jordan Horne, Anna Baehr, Millie Jordan, and Will Jordan; a very special nephew, the Reverend Adam Lewis and his companion Thom Chu of New York City, as well as an extended family of nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank her care giver, companion and friend, Jean McKee. The family is also thankful for the support and services provided by Covenant Hospice. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
