Dorothy Joan Metz, a resident of Newton passed away on Friday, September 4, 2009 at Flowers Hospital. She was 71.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at St. John’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Egby officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. A Rosary service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends following until 8:00 p.m. Flowers are being accepted or memorial donations may be made in her name to the charity of your choice.Mrs. Metz was born on December 18, 1937 in Newburg, NY. She resided in Baltimore, MD for 17 years prior to moving to Newton in 1987. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Metz was also a member of the Dothan Deanery and ACCW and a member of the Burse Club. She served as past president of the Dothan Deanery and the Ozark Catholic Womens Club. She was also a member of the Houston County Republican Womens Club and the Womens Auxiliary Knights of Columbus in Daleville.Survivors include her husband Joseph C. Metz, Sr. of Newton; sons, Joseph C. Metz, Jr. and his wife Michell of Jacksonville, NC, Martin L. Metz and his wife HeeSook of Taylor, AL; daughters, Dorothy J. O’Brien and her husband Michael of Essex, MD, Gail C. Smith and her husband Nick of Dundalk, MD, Carrie L. Metz of Dundalk, MD; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister Beverly Willett of Rochester, NY; brothers-in-law, John Metz of Newton, AL, Thomas Metz of St. Petersburg, FL. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
