Portland

Douglas "Doug" McSween, a cherished father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, at the age of 65 in Dothan, Alabama. Born in Newton, Alabama, on November 27, 1958, to the late Jackson Dawson McSween and Edna Benton, Doug's larger-than-life personality and enduring spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Doug graduated from Dale County High School in 1977, where he laid the foundation for a life marked by service and laughter. He went on to serve his country with honor and pride in the US Air Force for 10 years as a medic, a role that showcased his compassion and dedication to helping others. During his military service, Doug strived to make a difference in people's lives through a career in Pediatric Medicine before eventually joining the team at G.E., where he worked for several years.

Never one to sit idle, Doug was the epitome of someone who lived life to the fullest. He was a consummate jokester and goofball, known for his stubbornness and for always doing things his way. His infectious humor and spirited nature made him a memorable presence in any gathering.

Music was one of Doug's greatest passions. He had an eclectic taste, enjoying the sounds of Prince, Elvis, the Carpenters, the Beatles, and a variety of country music artists. The song "Imagine" by the Beatles held a special place in his heart, as did "Purple Rain," which he would enthusiastically sing during his favorite pastime, karaoke.

Doug's love for life was matched by his love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his daughters, Brandi and Ashleigh McSween; his grandchild, Cooper Posey McSween; his brothers, James, Jack, Fred, Darryl, and Ronnie McSween; and his sisters, Janice Lee and Martha Wallace. He was a beloved uncle to his 16 nieces and nephews, who will miss his playful spirit and endless storytelling.

In addition to his family, Doug's community was an essential part of his life. He was a familiar face at the local Waffle House, where he would spend hours in conversation with friends. His faith was important to him, and he attended Dothan 1st Assembly, where he found solace and fellowship.

Those who knew Doug would describe him as funny, interesting, and spirited. He had the rare ability to light up a room with his presence and make people feel truly seen and heard. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Jackson Dawson McSween and Edna Benton, and his brother, Billy Frank McSween. Yet his memory will live on through the countless stories, the shared laughter, and the many lives he touched with his unique and loving spirit.

We will gather to celebrate Doug's life and the joy he brought into our world. His legacy of laughter, music, and love will continue to inspire and comfort us as we navigate the world without him. Doug McSween's story is one of a life well-lived and a man well-loved, and he will be dearly missed.

A celebration of life will be held at 2pm, Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in the Sunset Chapel with military honors to follow. The family will be receiving friends an hour prior. He will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
