On the evening of May 28, the angel of silence visited our home and sealed the lips of Dr. Jimmy Wallace McLeod, a loving caring and compassionate husband, father, brother and physician.
rnDr. McLeod was born on April 2, to the late, L.O. & Ruth McLeod in Ozark, AL. rnA Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 am Saturday at St. Columba Catholic Church with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 pm until 7 pm Friday with a prayer service beginning at 7 pm. rnHe received his early childhood education in the public school systems in Ozark, AL, graduating valedictorian of his senior class at D.A. Smith High School. He attended Clark College in Atlanta, GA for his undergraduate studies receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with honors. He then attained his Medical Degree with honors from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. rnHe was a member of St. Paul AME Church in Ozark, AL and later joined with Saint Columba Catholic Church in Dothan, AL. rnHe met his soul mate Dolores Jean Johnson in Nashville, TN. They were united in Holy Matrimony for 42 years, a union which continued until his passing. From this union two children were born, Brian and Kimberly. rnHe served his country as a Major in the U.S. Army stationed in Puson and Seoul, Korea and Fort Rucker, AL. After his military tour, he established a private practice in Dothan, AL and was the first black general surgeon in Dothan on staff at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. During his tenure, he was chosen “Doctor of the Year” several times. Retiring from private practice, he worked part-time as an emergency room physician in the Wiregrass and surrounding areas. rnHe was preceded in death by his father and mother, L.O. and Ruth McLeod; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Christine Beasley; brothers-in-law, Joseph Beasley Jr. and Clayton Johnson. rnHis memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife, Dolores; children, Brian Tonya McLeod and Kimberly McLeod Gueric Doucet, a devoted sister, Faye McLeod and god-son John Rogers Sofia; seven grandchildren, Brittney, Blythe, Bianca, Alexis, Chase, Gavin and Braylen; aunts, Hannah Turrentine, Viola Guilford, Ola Mae McLeod, and Verna Sue Williams; uncle Sherman Lillian Horne; sisters-in-law, Julia “Vickie” Black and Jannie Beasley; brothers-in-law, Neartis Patricia Clark and Leon Christine Clark; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; special cousins, Grace Crittenden, Betty Jordan, Rev. Gregory McLeod, and Rev. J. Nelson McLeod; he was blessed with many God children; two childhood friends, Spencer Stokes and Fred Rhymes and many devoted colleagues, former patients and friends. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
