Emery Lewis Mckinney

November 18, 1938 — March 5, 2017

Emery Lewis McKinney, 78, of Dothan, died March 5, 2017 with his wife Kay at his side.

Born November 18, 1938 in College Corners, Ohio, the only son of Kathryn and Donald Lewis McKinney, Emery graduated high school in Hamilton, Ohio, and studied electrical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, earning his tuition by playing drums in a regional band specializing in country and swing music of the era. Emery had a long and successful career in construction design and management, focusing originally on roadways, then on churches, and finally on residential modular housing, which brought him to Dothan. Emery had a wide range of interests, including civil war firearms, antiques, and history. He earned his pilot’s license as a young man and traveled widely.

Emery is survived by his wife of 37 years: Kay Frederick McKinney; one son: Philip Todd Cheek (Scarlett); two grandchildren: Harlie Kae Cheek and Ryleigh Elizabeth Cheek; one niece: Angela Hammond; one nephew: Tony Frederick (Liz); and four great-nieces and nephews.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Emery, a man of deep integrity, humor, wit, and wisdom.
