Emma "Nell" Nell Sizemore

Emma Nell McKay Sizemore, affectionately known as Nell, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, after an extended illness. Born on April 12, 1935, in Dothan, Alabama, Nell's journey through life was marked by her unwavering strength, love, and dedication to her family, which remained her greatest pride and joy until her final days in Columbia, Alabama.

As a young woman, Nell married Charles Milton Sizemore, Sr., a military man, in 1951, embracing the life of a true military wife with grace and resilience. Her journey alongside Charles was filled with travels and the raising of five beautiful children, a testament to her loving nature as a mother. Nell's spirit of hard work and perseverance shone brightly through her career, most notably with Bayuk Cigars, later known as Swedish Match, where her colleagues fondly referred to her as "Miss Nell." Her ascent to a supervisory role was a notable achievement, especially as a woman in management during that era. Nell also shared her compassion and care working at Stephenson Smith IGA in the deli and as a caregiver at General Hospital.

Despite the challenges of sometimes juggling two jobs, Nell never let her professional life overshadow her role as a mother. Her children never knew want, thanks to her self-reliance and good work ethic. She instilled these values in her children, along with the virtues of integrity and independence. Nell's home was a haven of love and meticulous care, with her children always presented in clean and neatly dressed attire, reflecting the pride she took in her family.

Nell's interests and talents were many. She was a member of a local Methodist church. Her evenings were often spent in quiet reflection with her Bible before bed. Nell was also a skilled seamstress, crafting clothes and Halloween costumes with the same love and attention she devoted to every aspect of her life. Her culinary skills were legendary, especially her biscuits and fried chicken, and she took great delight in hosting holiday dinners and baking homemade birthday cakes for each family member.

As a social butterfly with a friendly demeanor, Nell never met a stranger. She was outgoing and cherished her interactions with people from all walks of life. Her conversations were infused with intelligence and warmth, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her.

Nell's legacy is carried on by her loving family: son, Charles (Talli) Sizemore, Jr.; daughters, Mary Beth (Allen) Brackin, Mona Moore, and Linda Collins; her son-in-law, Eddie Batchelor; grandchildren, Chrysty Johnson, Jamie Hoback, Tika French, Scott French, Chris Moore, Katie Meadows, Heather Rash, Timothy Wright, Adam Batchelor, Amber Martin, Thad Mitchell, Laiken Mitchell, Sabrey Sizemore, Michael Monday, and Matthew Brackin; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Jean Sikes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of cherished friends and family members.

Nell was preceded in death by the father of her children, Charles Milton Sizemore, Sr.; her parents, Lewie and Trudie McKay; her five sisters; her daughter, Debbie Batchelor; and by her son-in-law, Rick Collins. Her life's journey, marked by the cotton fields of her childhood to the heights of her professional and personal accomplishments, is a story of a remarkable woman whose impact will be felt for generations.

Nell Sizemore's life was a tapestry woven with love, hard work, and devotion. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of a life well-lived, full of love, friendship, and the indomitable spirit of a woman who truly made a difference. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who knew her.
