Emmette Ross Clifton

March 14, 1926 — May 31, 2009

Emmette Ross Clifton, Jr., a resident of Dothan, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009 with his loving wife and son at his bedside at Wesley Manor of Alzheimer. He was 83.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Talmadge Butler officiating and Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends following the services.

Mr. Clifton was born on March 14, 1926 in Ethel, MS and spent the early years of his life there. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Clifton attended Mississippi College in Jackson, MS and was the last person to be appointed by Congress to be a United States Postmaster in Ethel, MS. He worked as a postmaster for over 44 years training several other postmasters in the state of Mississippi. He retired in 1991 in Kosciusko, MS and stayed there until moving to Dothan in 1994.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Yvonne Sweatt Clifton of Dothan; a son Dr. E. Ross Clifton, III of Dothan; two grandsons, Raynor Wesley Clifton of Dothan, Brennan Ross Clifton of Dothan; a sister Mary Rhodes Swayze of Oxford, MS; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Henry Meador of San Antonio, TX; many nieces and nephews also survive.
