Freeland R. Hollowell, Sr., a resident of Dothan passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Westside Terrace. He was 86.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Sunset Memorial Park Pavilion with Rev. John Withrock officiating and Robert Byrd directing. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Memory of Freeland Hollowell, Sr. to the Alabama-Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, 6801 W. Main St., Dothan, AL, 36305.Mr. Hollowell was born on August 23, 1923 in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone. He attended school there and later served in the U.S. Army-Air Corp during WWII. After his discharge from the military, he returned to the Canal Zone becoming a Canal Zone Police Officer for 13 years and then transferred to the Motor Transportation Division where he eventually retired as a General Foreman after 35 years of service with the Panama Canal Company. Freeland received the “Master Key” to the Panama Canal by Governor H.R. Parfitt for his tireless volunteer work with the Boy Scouts of America, and the Annual Cayuco Races through the Canal. Freeland met his wife, Mary Straus, in the Canal Zone and they were married on October 8, 1949. In 1979, Freeland and Mary along with their children Freeland Jr., David, and Laurie, moved to Dothan, AL following his retirement. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society since 1961, and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post PC01, Balboa, Rep. of Panama. The family wishes to give a special thanks to Westside Terrace, Covenant Hospice, 4 East at Southeast Alabama Center, Pilchers Ambulance and Engine 9 of the Dothan Fire Department.He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret and Ross H. Hollowell and infant daughter Jenny Hollowell. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Mary of Dothan; his sons Freeland, Jr. of Dothan and David of Mobile; a daughter Laurie Jeanne of Dothan; a sister Lois M. Jones of St. Petersburg, FL; 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Burial Date: January 1, 1970Visits: 2
