Gary Bennett

November 14, 1951 — August 13, 2024

Gary Howard Bennett, a cherished father, grandfather, sibling, and friend, passed away peacefully in Dothan, Alabama, on August 13, 2024, at the age of 72. Known affectionately as Gary to all, he leaves behind a legacy of love, selflessness, and generosity that will continue to resonate with those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on November 14, 1951, Gary grew into a man of many passions and talents. He pursued his love for nature and science at Troy University, where he earned a degree in Environmental Science. His academic achievements paved the way for a distinguished career in public service. Gary dedicated 25 years at the Houston County Health Department before taking on a vital role at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, from which he retired in 2017. His commitment to his community extended beyond his professional life, as he was a founding member of the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center and a devoted volunteer at Evergreen Food Pantry.

Gary's faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was ordained as an elder at Evergreen Presbyterian Church, where his service and commitment were greatly valued. His spiritual life was as rich and deep as his love for his family and community.

Family was the heart of Gary's world. He is survived by his loving daughters, Abby Wilson (Allan) and Alyson Newsome (Jay); his cherished grandchildren, Sutton Wilson, Sawyer Wilson, Emma Newsome, and Owen Newsome, who brought immense joy and laughter to his life. Gary's siblings, Sherry Delair (Jimmy), and Kathy Smith, will remember their brother with fondness and deep affection. His presence will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors who saw in him a figure of unwavering support and kindness. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred Bennett, who instilled in him the values of love and family that he carried throughout his life, and a brother, Gordon Bennett.

An avid Alabama Football fan, Gary's enthusiasm for his team was infectious, and game days were always a special occasion. His friends and family will recall how his reserved nature would give way to spirited cheers and lively discussions whenever football was on the screen. Gary was also known for his impeccable attention to detail; a perfectionist at heart, he took pride in everything he did, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

His love for music and art was a testament to his appreciation for beauty in all forms, and he had an eye for the extraordinary in the everyday. Gary delighted in exploring new cuisines and sharing meals with loved ones. Those meals were often followed by stories and laughter, as Gary cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, nurturing their curiosity and watching them grow.

Gary Bennett was a man of many layers, a quiet force of kindness that changed lives in subtle yet profound ways. In his passing, he leaves a void that will be felt by many, but also a treasure trove of memories that will continue to inspire and comfort those he loved.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Gary lived by this principle, and his success is immeasurable, reflected in the hearts and memories of those he leaves behind.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 3:30pm at Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Dothan. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Evergreen Food Pantry in his honor.
