George Raymond Aman

April 17, 1934 — January 12, 2015

George Raymond Aman, 80, a resident of Avon, died peacefully Monday afternoon at home with family in attendance.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Bluff Springs Baptist Church with his nephew, Rev. Greg Aman, and Rev. Dennis Singletary officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL, 36111.

Mr. Aman was born April 17, 1934 in Ashford, AL to William Benjamin and Hettie Mendheim Aman. He was a 1952 graduate of Ashford High School. He worked for Sunnyland Packing Company for a number of years, worked as manager and part owner in Pittman Corp., and retired from Farley Nuclear Plant. Upon his retirement he continued to work for Advanced Fire and Safety up to his illness.

Mr. Aman served two terms as mayor of Avon. He also served as Ashford Recreation Director for several years in a volunteer capacity; Mr. Aman served in the PTO and Quarterback Club for Ashford High School, and served three terms 18 years as a member of the Houston County Board of Education. Mr. Aman was a member of Bluff Springs Baptist Church in Ashford for over 55 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings; brothers, Herman, William Edward, and Truman; and sisters, Freddie Mae Bradshaw and Jean Kelley.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jean Smith Aman; a son Phillip Raymond Wanda Aman; grandchildren, Amanda Chad Searcy and Chris Aman; great-grandchildren, Grayson, Landon, and Hudson Searcy; step-granddaughters, Amy Kris Balkcom and Lori Ashley Beasley; step-great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Folger, Sela Balkcom, and Tanner Folger; brother-in-law Lorell Ann Smith; sisters-in-law, Linda Aman and Jean Aman; many nieces, nephews, and extended Aman and Mendheim relatives survive.

Serving as pallbearers will be nephews, James Aman, Stanley Aman, Stephen Kelley, Randy Aman, Terry Kelley and Scott Aman, as well as a good friend and neighbor Kincaid Knight. Honorary pallbearers will be Morris Jinks and Rodney Crooms.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Thomas Brown and Dr. Jarrod Adkinson and the staff and nurses at Dothan Oncology, Covenant Hospice, and the Southeast Cancer Center.

Mr. Aman will be remembered for his generosity to those needing help and for his diligence in serving causes he believed in.
