George Wesley Buck Medley

George Wesley “Buck” Medley was born to Arthur Wesley and Florence Leatha Medley 23 March 1932 in Lee Hall, Virginia. He attended public and government schools in Virginia, Washington state, California, Japan, and Nebraska. In 1953 he met Shirley Murray. They married 22 July 1955 in Lincoln. He is survived by his spouse, Shirley Medley; his children, Summer Day Hannah (David) Norman, OK.; Peppi Lynn Eliason (John David) Siler City, NC.; Arthur Ross Medley (Tina), Dothan, AL; his brother, Richard (Annabelle) Medley Corvallis, OR; his grandchildren, Autumn Hannah Hobbs, April Hannah Smith, Amber Hannah Talkington, David A. and PVT Andrew Hannah; SPC4 Scott Busenlehner, Shawn Busenlehner, Christopher and Holden Eliason, Chase, Ross and Caroline Medley who will serve as his pallbearers.

George was commissioned a second lieutenant United States Army upon graduation from the University of Nebraska in June 1955 and reported to active duty 24 July 1955. In twenty-five years active service George served various posts and assignments in the United States, Germany, Vietnam [(Bronze Star, Silver Star with Cross of Gallantry (Vietnamese)], Thailand/Laos. He ended his military career as an Advisor to the Alabama National Guard, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in Tuscaloosa.

Upon retirement George became the Manager of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the American Red Cross (later the West Alabama Chapter) and remained in that position for eighteen and one-half years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, West Alabama Officers’ Association, Exchange Club, and Tuscaloosa Writers' Group.

Graveside services will be held at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park, 10 a.m. Monday October 16th. Service to be officiated by Pastor Dan Kilgore of First United Methodist Church, Tuscaloosa and David Hannah. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm on Sunday October 15, 2017 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Electronic guest book is available through Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Dothan. Tuscaloosa Memorial Park Funeral Home is handling local needs in Tuscaloosa.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross in Tuscaloosa or to the Disabled American Veterans in the name of George Wesley Medley.
