George W. Turk

George Watson Turk, a resident of Dothan passed away on January 21, 2010. He was 81.

Funeral service and burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Willis of Ridgecrest Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. Visitation will begin at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Flowers are being accepted or donations may be made for children’s cancer research.Mr. Turk was principal of Young Junior High School from 1953 to its closing in 1978. Upon retirement, he and his wife opened Juliette’s which was in business until 1986. Beginning in 1987, Mr. Turk was assistant principal at Hazelhurst Middle School in Hazelhurst, Georgia. In 1996 he and his wife returned to Dothan. During his tenure as Young Junior principal, he served as president of the Dothan Education Association twice 1958-59, 1972-73. He was vice-president of the District Principal’s Association 1966-67 and president from 1967-68. He also served as vice-president of the District Principal’s/Superintendents’ Association from 1969-70 and as president from 1970-71. Mr. Turk also taught Sunday School classes at both Hazelhurst Baptist and Ridgecrest Baptist Churches for several years.Mr. Turk is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juliette Turk of Dothan; his children, Lynn Steve Perryman of Helena, AL, Teedy Dave Lummus of Dothan, Cheryl Jim Walters of Gainesville, GA, and George Turk of Tallahassee, FL; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
