Hazel Claire Elmore Hilyer

August 31, 1924 — March 22, 2009

Hazel Claire Elmore Hilyer, of Dothan went to be with our Lord Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center following a brief illness. She was 84.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Ashford with Rev. Todd Thorpe officiating. Burial will follow in Ashford City Cemetery with Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 206 West Troy Street, Dothan, Alabama 36303.Mrs. Hilyer was born August 31, 1924 in Pansey, AL and lived there the early years of her life. She resided in Ashford for over forty years prior to moving to Dothan in 2004. Mrs. Hilyer was a bookkeeper and she owned and operated Ashford Accounting Services for several years. Mrs. Hilyer was also employed with the U. S. Postal Service and served as Postmaster for several years until her retirement in 1995. She started the first Kindergarten in Ashford. She was a member of the Retired Postmaster Association, American Heart Association, the Forsythia Garden Club, the Ashford Study Club, the Newcomers Club, and was very active member with the First Baptist Church of Ashford and her Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hilyer was widely known for her love and generosity and she enjoyed spending time with her family at the beach and loved to travel.Survivors include her husband of 57 years, W.O. “Bill” Hilyer, Dothan; two sons, David Hilyer, Pensacola, FL, Bill Hilyer and his wife Darlene, Dothan; two daughters, Deborah Hilyer Woodfin and her husband Milton, Prattville, AL, Pam Rotshtein and her husband Vital, Los Angeles, CA; five grandchildren, Kasey Woodfin Hope and her husband T.R., Zac Woodfin and his wife Fawn, Cameron Hilyer, Ashley Hilyer, Batia Rotshtein; a great granddaughter, Kloe Hope; a sister Robbie Brown, Dothan, AL; several nieces and nephews. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
