Henry Howard Johnston passed away peacefully on April 25, 2023, in Dothan Alabama in the presence of his loving and devoted wife, Santa. Henry, formerly of Lloyd Harbor, New York where he lived for 50 years, was born in Jamesport, New York on August 16, 1927. He was 95 years young at the time of his
passing.
Henry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Santa Johnston, their daughter Marion Wylly (Wesley) and their son Henry Johnston Jr. (Jennifer). He was also a proud and loving grandfather to Caroline Johnston, Ralston Wylly, Stryker Wylly, and Rider Wylly. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Clifton Johnston and Marion Wyckoff Johnston, and his sister, Deborah Campbell.
Henry graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1949 and went on to serve his country with distinction in both World War II and the Korean War. Afterwards, he lived a storied career on the open water as a merchant mariner, culminating his service as the Chief Engineer of the world's first nuclear powered commercial ship, the NS Savannah. Though his career took him around the world, his heart was always with his family, the source of is pride and joy.
Henry was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Huntington, New York and lived his life accordingly. A celebration of Henry's life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11am at Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home.
