Herbert Junior Hughes

January 22, 1932 — June 18, 2024

Dothan

Herbert Hughes, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024, in Dothan, AL, at the age of 92. Born on January 22, 1932, Herbert's life was a testament to love, service, and faith. His journey began as one of ten children, and he was blessed with a large, loving family, including his devoted wife of 70 years, Katie, his two brothers, two sisters, his children Bobbie Green, Terry Hughes, and Herbert Lavon Hughes, along with his seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who will all hold dear the memory of his kind and generous spirit.

Herbert's early years were defined by hard work, as he helped his father sharecrop in Alabama. Seeking better opportunities, the family moved to Florida, where Herbert's strong sense of duty led him to be drafted into the Army. He served as a medic, his compassion and dedication evident as he provided care to his fellow soldiers, first in Europe and then during the Korean War. His patriotism was unwavering, and he wore his veteran status as a badge of honor throughout his life.

It was during a leave back home in Alabama that Herbert met the love of his life, Katie. Their love blossomed into a partnership that would endure for seven decades, marked by mutual respect and deep affection. After his military service, they settled in Florida, where they raised their family. Herbert was a provider in every sense, ensuring that his children had not only their material needs met but also a strong foundation of Christian values and the importance of familial love.

Upon retiring from Farmland Industries, Herbert and Katie returned to their roots in Dothan, the place where Herbert's journey began. Retirement brought with it a new chapter and a deepening of faith for Herbert. He committed his life to the Lord and experienced a transformation that touched every aspect of his being. As a member of Memphis Baptist Church, he immersed himself in the study of the Bible and fellowship with his church community, his faith becoming the cornerstone of his daily life.

Herbert's later years were enriched by his discovery of a love for music, particularly songs that spoke of joy and the promise of heavenly peace. "What a Day That Will Be" and "Happy Day" were a couple of his favorites, encapsulating his anticipation of the day he would meet his Savior face to face. His relationship with Christ, his family, and the friendships he cultivated were the treasures he held most dear, always striving to "do the right thing" and to spread kindness wherever he went.

Upon Herbert entering the last days of being in his physical body, he was overcome with very deep feelings of joy and love for everyone, especially his family and his country. Herbert was a great husband, father, friend and provider, always there to support the ones he loved.

Herbert's life journey has come to a peaceful close, but the impact of his 92 years will continue to resonate with all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and community. As we say farewell to Herbert, we take comfort in knowing that he is now experiencing the "Happy Day" he so joyfully anticipated, in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
