Howard Robert Smead, 77, of Dothan passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at his residence.

rnFuneral services will be held 11 am Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating and Robert Byrd directing. Military Honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11 prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2346 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama 36301. rnMr. Smead was born April 2, 1934 in Massachusetts and resided there the early part of his life. He joined the U.S. Army and served for 3 years completing his service in the Panama Canal Zone in 1954. Following his military service he worked with the Panama Canal Co. At the time of his retirement in 1986 he was Captain of the Dredging Division. He moved to Dothan in 1986 and was employed with PEMCO for 22 years until 2009. Mr. Smead was a past president of the AFL-CIO #595 in the Panama Canal Zone. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. rnSurvivors include his wife Maria Smead of Dothan; sons, Robert Howard Smead Leticia of Republic of Panama and Richard Edmond Smead Patricia of Smiths, AL; a daughter Helen F. Burns Chris of Chesterfield, VA; 5 grandchildren, Angie, Allen, Michael, Annette, and Sarah; 7 great-grandchildren, Santago, Adrian, Corbin, Alia, Benjamin, Owen and Kaleb; a sister Eleanor Baker; several nieces and nephews also survive. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
