Irene Shirling, a resident of Vernon, FL, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at her residence. She was 79.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday, May 8, 2010 in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Newton City Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Flowers are being accepted or memorial donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, Dothan, Alabama. The family will be at Nelda McKnight’s residence, 43 East Highway 134, Pinckard, Alabama.Mrs. Shirling was born on May 23, 1930 in Vernon, FL and lived there the early years of her life. She attended Vernon High School and married her husband Ralph Shirling in 1949. She resided in Lakeland, FL for about a year and moved to Grimes, AL in 1951. She was employed with Judy Bond for 17 years and was a homemaker. She loved to crochet and make doyles and tablecloths. Mrs. Shirling was a member of United Methodist Church, Vernon, Florida and the Historic Society.Mrs. Shirling was preceded in death by her parents, Emory and Julia Bruner; two sisters, Dixie Bruner and Margaret Ann Walls, and two brothers, Emory C. Tater Bruner, Jr. and William Paul “Bill” Bruner; a nephew, Paul Bruner.Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Ralph Shirling of Vernon, FL; a son, William Shirling wife June Madison of Dothan, AL; two daughters, Nelda McKnight husband Jimmy of Pinckard, AL and Ginger Grimsley husband Bo of Headland, AL; four grandchildren, Leah Laws husband Roy, Raina McKnight, Keysha Allsup husband Kenny, Allen Grimsley wife Brittany; three great-grandchildren, Chase Allsup, Ava Allsup and Lily Laws; a sister, Ruth Roche of Vernon, FL; several nieces and nephews also survive.Serving as active pallbearers will be Kenny Allsup, Shawn Walls, Tony Kenward, Roger Norris, Andy Robinson and William Shirling.
