Irma Whatley

Irma Gennine Whatley, 77, of Midland City passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013 at her residence.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Edenfield and Rev. Ed Onley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, 416 Bethlehem Road, Midland City, AL, 36350 or to your favorite charity.

Mrs. Whatley was born February 10, 1936 in Ariton, AL and moved to Midland City at an early age and remained there most of her life. She worked as a doctors assistant and also at Bud Cigar Factory and the Dothan Hosiery Mill. At the age of 44 after raising a family, she returned to school and attained her Registered Nursing degree and worked with Flowers Hospital outpatient for 16 years until her retirement in 1998. Mrs. Whatley was a very active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she was a member of the Charity Sunday School Class, served as WMU Director, served as the church treasurer, and worked with the church outreach program assisting shut-ins.

Survivors include her husband John Whatley of Midland City; a daughter Terri Knowles of Newville; sons, Johnny M. Angi Whatley, Jr. of Dothan and Russell Anita Whatley of Auburn; grandchildren, Shannon Smith, Matthew Kimberly Smith, Brynn Whatley, Blake Whatley, Kadin Whatley, and Britton Whatley; great-grandsons Andrew Davis and Dylan Smith; sisters, Evelyn Hidy Green and Jeanette Newton; several nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Wesley Green, Larry Green, Kadin Whatley, Blake Whatley, Matthew Smith, and Toby Underwood. Honorary pallbearers will be Britton Whatley and Andrew Davis.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Gentiva Hospice and Dr. Paola Bass for their loving care and compassion.
