Jack Burton

Jack Raymond Burton, 84, of Dothan passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 11 am Monday, October 8, 2012 at Evergreen Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joe Johnson and Rev. Sandy Lacey officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Evergreen Presbyterian Church, 1103 N. Pontiac Ave., Dothan, AL, 36303, Wiregrass Humane Society, P.O. Box 1045, Dothan, AL, 36302, or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL, 36303.

Mr. Burton was born October 16, 1927 in Fairfield, Alabama and lived the early part of his life in Birmingham. He received his B.S. Degree in Education from Livingston University, his Masters and Ed.S. from Vanderbilt University, and his Ed.D. from Highlands University. He was a professional baseball scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mr. Burton was employed with the Alabama Department of Education for over 46 years, and at the time of his retirement in 1990 he was working in child nutrition. He resided in Gulf Shores for several years prior to moving to Dothan in 2007. He was a member of the Evergreen Presbyterian Church, the Civitans, and the Alabama High School Athletic Association. He was a devoted husband and loving father and pappaw. His words and guidance were inspirational to his family and friends. His smile was one that brightened every room.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years Dolores "Joey" Burton of Dothan; daughters, Marna Burton Bud Bellande of Birmingham, and Ginger Burton Craig Scarbrough of Dothan; grandchildren, Burt Bellande, Will Bellande, and Merrill Kate Scarbrough; 2 nephews and a niece also survive.
