Jack Calvin Ham

April 11, 1997 — January 8, 2015

Jack Calvin Ham, 17, of Dothan, Alabama, was opinionated and argumentative but at the same time made everyone around him laugh.  He died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 8, 2015, and the world is and always will be a little dimmer without the bright, charismatic Jack.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Covenant United Methodist Church with Rev. Hays McKay officiating and Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Wiregrass Angel House, P.O. Box 7133, Dothan, AL, 36302, or to Boy Scout Troop #38, c/o First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36303, or to the UAB School of Medicine Jack Calvin Ham Memorial Medical Scholarship, UAB Gift Records, AB 1230, 1720 2nd Ave South, Birmingham, AL, 35294-0112 www.UAB.edu/onlinegiving.

Jack spent his entire scholastic career in Dothan City Schools, so the senior class at Northview High School has lost a lifelong friend.

He was a dedicated Alabama football fan, a passionate soccer player and Arsenal FC fan, and a key player on the losing Covenant United Methodist Church senior high basketball team. His stunning drum skills landed him a primo gig with the CUMC youth praise band. This analytical young man enjoyed time outside camping, hiking, canoeing, and repeatedly jumping off the dock at Grandma and Grandpa’s house at Lake Eufaula.

Jack earned the rank of Eagle Scout at age 15 with Troop 38 but wouldn’t let his parents have a ceremony for him, because he didn’t want the attention. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.  Since he was an overachiever, he dual-enrolled at Wallace Community College for the past two years.

His long-term goals were to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham to pursue a career in medicine.

His short-term goals were to spend time with his brother and their friends, stay out past curfew, sleep late, watch comedians and TV on Netflix, and pass pre-cal.

He is and will be missed every day by his parents Levin and Lori Ham and by his brother Brett, with whom he argued with every breath and loved with his whole heart; his grandparents are Ronald and Brenda Bass, Kenneth and Luttrell Ham, and the late Jeanelle Ham, all of Abbeville, AL; his great-grandmothers, Ione Newman of Meldrim, GA and the late Nellie Ham of Tumbleton and Frances Hughes of Ozark; his aunts and uncles Simone & Ron Tedder of Dothan, Brandi & Shane Kyles of Opelika and the late Ricky Ham of Abbeville.

Burial Date: January 1, 1970
