James Baxley

June 24, 1946 — February 19, 2009

James Baxley, of 1202 Sumter Street, Dothan died there Thursday, February 19, 2009 following a brief illness. He was 62.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Withrock officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 4 until 6 pm. Flowers are being accepted or memorial may be made to Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36301.

Mr. Baxley was born on June 24, 1946 in Clopton, Alabama and he lived the early years of his life in Dale County. He attended school in Newton and graduated from Carroll High School in 1964. Mr. Baxley served in the U.S. Navy for four years and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was employed with Woodall’s Heating and Cooling as a sheet metal fabricator for 15 years and later at Ft. Rucker in the civil service as a Heating and Cooling sheet metal fabricator.

Mr. Baxley is preceded in death by his mother Lena Pearl Trawick Spivey, his father Dempsey D. Baxley, his step-father Franklin Spivey, a brother Dempsey Douglas Baxley, a brother-in-law Donald St. Mary.

Survivors include his sister, Peggy Baxley St. Mary, Dothan; his brother, Ben Spivey and his wife Judy, Columbus, GA; five nieces, Marlene Chilcoate and her husband Douglas, Talkeena, Alaska, Donna Chapman and her husband, Freddy, Dothan, Vicky Evelo and her husband, Mark, Tallahassee, FL, Becky Kring, Tallahassee, FL, and Sergeant Bridget Baxley, Fort Walton Beach, FL; four nephews, Bob Bowman and his wife, Shirley, Dothan, Michael Beaty, Panama City Beach, FL, Bart Baxley, Tallahassee, FL, and Brent Spivey and his wife Lisa, Columbus, GA; several cousins, great nieces and nephews; an aunt, Georgia Richards, Napier Field; his former wife, Barbara Porter Baxley.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Bob Bowman, Michael Beaty, Mark Evelo, Freddy Chapman, George Richards, Larry Richards, and William Richards.
