James Farmer

October 14, 1951 — November 16, 2016

James Jim Davis Farmer, passed away on the 16th day of November, 2016.  He was preceded in death by parents, LA Bill Farmer 1995 and Erin Farmer 2011.

Jim graduated from Dothan High School in 1970.  He attended the University of Alabama and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974. He then graduated from the Alabama School of Law in 1977.

A fourth-generation attorney, he considered himself privileged to practice law in Dothan with his father, good friend and partner W. Davis Malone, III.  For 35 years, he was an accomplished attorney who held the highest possible rating for professional excellence from his fellow attorneys and the judiciary. He was a member of the Alabama Bar Association and Houston County Bar Association, serving as president in 1998. He was also admitted to practice in numerous federal courts including the United States Supreme Court.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Boutwell Farmer, daughter Katharine Farmer, son Brigman Farmer, son Alex Farmer and daughter-in-law Andrea Burton Farmer, granddaughter Isabel Farmer and grandson Samuel Farmer, sister Anne Evans Allen Newell Tuscaloosa, AL, Uncle Jerry A. Davis, M.D. Jane Tuscaloosa, AL, sisters-in-law Sandra B. Owens Stan Luverne, AL and Sharon B. Catrino, Destin FL, and many nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers are James M. Givan, Davis F. Chapman, Rufus R. Smith, Craig L. Coe, M.D., Lee M. Brennan, W. Davis Malone, III, Edward M. Price, and Stephen T. Etheredge.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Houston County Bar Association.

Visitation will be in the parlor at the First United Methodist Church of Dothan, AL at 2 pm on Saturday, November 19th.  The service will follow at 3 pm in the sanctuary with Wes Kelley officiating.  Graveside services will be held at Memory Hill Cemetery after the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations to First United Methodist Church of Dothan/Respite Care Ministry.  Directed by Robert Byrd, Sunset Funeral Home.
