James Harold Smith

March 3, 1960 — October 23, 2024

James Harold Smith, Jr., known fondly as Smitty to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 64. Born on March 3, 1960, in Georgetown, South Carolina, James lived a life marked by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a generous spirit

James was the cherished husband of Barbara Meredith Smith, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Together, they raised a family that became his pride and joy. His legacy lives on through his children, Justin Harold Smith (married to Ceanna) of Panama City, Florida, and Heather Smith Williams (married to Sam) of Dothan, and his beloved grandchildren, Samuel Smith Williams, Annaleigh Ruth Williams, Addie Grace Armstrong, Cooper James Armstrong, and the soon-to-arrive William James Smith.

James was the treasured son of Nell Smith and the late James Harold Smith, Sr.., and a dedicated brother to his sister, Cindy Thomas. James's warmth and guidance also touched his special nieces and nephew, Jamie Nell Thomas Armstrong, Holly Thomas Albrecht, Eddie Donaldson, Jr., and Jennifer Donaldson, who will remember him fondly.

A proud graduate of Dothan High School in 1978, James's commitment to his community was evident throughout his career. His tenure at Georgia Pacific in Cedar Springs, Georgia, showcased his commitment to hard work and his ability to be a team player. At Georgia Pacific, he was honored to serve as president of the local union. For the past 15 years, James has managed Highland Antiques, where his passion for preserving the past enriched the lives of those around him.

James's interests were a reflection of his selfless nature and his devotion to his family. He was a familiar face at all his grandchildren's games, meets and performances, cheering them on and offering words of encouragement and pride. His presence at these events will be deeply missed, but the memories will be cherished by all who loved him.

Those who knew James would describe him as loving and friendly, with a selflessness that knew no bounds. He was always willing to serve his neighbors in their time of need. His warm smile and open heart made him a well-known figure in his community, and his absence will be felt by many.

James's life was one of quiet strength, unwavering support, and deep compassion. He was a man who put his family first, who worked tirelessly to provide for them, and who gave his all to ensure their happiness. The values he instilled in his children and grandchildren—love, kindness, and generosity—will continue to guide them throughout their lives.
