James Thomas Mathis

James Thomas Mathis, known affectionately as Tom to his friends and family, passed away on January 4, 2024, after an extended illness. Born on May 5, 1945, in the close-knit community of Skipperville, Alabama, Tom carried the values of his hometown with him throughout his life. His final days were spent in Midland City, Alabama, surrounded by the love and care of those closest to him.

Raised in Headland, Alabama, Tom's early years were characterized by a strong sense of community and the importance of service to others. This foundation guided him as he ventured to Gulfport, Mississippi, for a time, expanding his horizons while always retaining his down-to-earth nature. Tom's career was as multifaceted as the man himself; he was not only a skilled carpenter by trade but also dedicated many years to law enforcement as the Chief of Police in Columbia and Headland. His commitment to justice and safety left an indelible mark on the communities he served.

Tom was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes about his character. Known for being straightforward and no-nonsense, he faced his illness with the same courage and selflessness that defined his life. Even in his final year, when his health was declining, his friendly demeanor and resilience never wavered, providing strength and comfort to those around him.

Family was the cornerstone of Tom's life, and he cherished his relationships with each member. He is survived by his sister, Brenda (Hilton) Barefield, and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Among them, his special nephew Jessie Barefield, with whom he shared a unique bond, will carry forward his uncle's legacy of kindness and integrity. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William David and Ila Jewel Mathis, by his brothers, David Mathis and William Durwood Mathis, and by his sister, Shirley Ann Turner.

Tom's interests were as straightforward as his personality. He found joy in the simple things and valued honest work, clear communication, and the well-being of his neighbors. His presence was a reassuring constant to those fortunate enough to know him, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

As we say goodbye to James Thomas "Tom" Mathis, we celebrate a life lived with honor, a life that touched countless others in profound and lasting ways.
