Jewel Ethel (White) Weatherington

August 12, 1933 — May 11, 2024

Dothan

Jewel Weatherington, a radiant beacon of love and faith, completed her earthly journey on May 11, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, after an extended illness. Born into the warmth of Pike County, Alabama, to Andrew and Pearl (Williams) White on August 12, 1933, Jewel's life was a testament to the enduring power of love and the strength of family bonds.

Jewel, a name as precious and unique as the person it described, was a devoted homemaker whose life revolved around the joy and wellbeing of her family. She was the loving matriarch to her children, Sylvia (Eddie) Coleman, Sherry Danzey-Brooks, Cathy Jewel Vance, Nadine (Miles) Freeman, and Craig Bernard (Tamami) Weatherington, her daughter-in-law, Lisa Weatherington, and the proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Her love also extended to a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish her memory.

Jewel was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John M. Weatherington, her son, John Weatherington, Jr., daughters, Rosie Weatherington Duncan and Carolyn Davis, her grandchildren, Bobby Jennings, Jr., Dwanna Danzey, Kelly Danzey, and Stephanie Gadlin, a great-grandchild, Breunia Jennings, her brothers, J. V. White and A. D. White, her sisters, Mary Lemons, Lottie White, Nettie Pearl Jones, Lois Witt, Bobbie Lee Carroll, Mae Helen Thomas, Geraldine Long, Ollie Beachman, and Dorothy Thomas, leaving a legacy of resilience and unconditional love.

Jewel's early years in the Grimes area were filled with learning and growth, setting the stage for a life dedicated to caring and nurturing. Her grandchildren, the twinkling stars in her life, experienced her tender care and watched as she lovingly kept her family united, including the great-grandchildren. Jewel's doting nature was the glue that held the family together, her home always a haven of warmth and laughter.

Her love for God was as deep as her love for her family, and Jewel was a cherished member of the Dothan North Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her faith was her compass, guiding her through life's challenges with grace and fortitude. Jewel's love for the outdoors was evident in the beautiful flowers she grew, each blossom a symbol of her dedication to creating beauty in the world.

Jewel's spirit was a blend of happiness and strength. She carried a good sense of humor and a quick wit that could light up any room. The legacy she leaves behind is one of a loving, faith-filled, and generous soul, whose life was a vivid illustration of the beauty of giving.

As we celebrate Jewel's life, let us remember her in the same way she lived—fully, joyfully, and with great love. On Friday, May 17, 2024, at 11 am, we will gather at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel to honor her memory, with Brother Robert Bivens officiating. Following the celebration, Jewel will be laid to rest in New Hope Cemetery, leaving a legacy of love and faith that will continue to blossom in the hearts of those she touched. The visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 9-11 am.

As we bid farewell to Jewel, let us not dwell on the sorrow of her passing but instead be inspired by the life she led. Let her memory be a guiding light, encouraging us to live with the same compassion and joy that she did every day. Jewel's story is not one of an ending, but a continuing legacy of love, laughter, and faith that will resonate for generations to come.
