Jimmie R. Smith, a resident of Dothan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 19, 2018. He was 74. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brenda Yon and Rev. Steven Ethridge officiating and Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10-11 am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rev. Brenda Yon at 412 Christopher Dr., Dothan, AL 36301. Mr. Smith was born on January 24, 1944 in Henry County, Alabama and lived in Columbia the early years of his life. He has resided in Dothan most of his life and he was employed with Smith Brothers Iron Works for several years and would later farm with Gilmore Farms. He was employed with the City of Dothan at the time of his retirement. Mr. Smith loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He attended Rocky Branch Congregational Holiness Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jackson and Ruby Mary Harrel Smith, 2 children, and 2 brothers. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mildred Smith; his son, Thomas Smith; his daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" Smith; two brothers and two sisters; a host of other family members including several nieces and nephews.
