Jimmy Lee Ash

Jimmy Lee Ash, known affectionately as Jimmy to his family and friends, passed away on October 31, 2024, after an extended illness in Dothan, Alabama, where he had spent his entire life. Born on January 14, 1951, in Dale County, Alabama, to the late Joe Lee Anderson and Climmie Merle Ash, Jimmy was a man whose presence was as steadfast as the crops he tenderly cultivated.

Growing up in the rich, fertile soils of Alabama, Jimmy was no stranger to hard work. He found his calling in the fields, and the rumble of a John Deere tractor was music to his ears. Although his career began with a four-year stint at Blissett Construction, it was clear that his heart was set on farming. Jimmy dedicated his life to growing peanuts, soybeans, and cotton, and it was this dedication to agriculture that defined his character and his contributions to the community. His passion for farming was only interrupted by a stroke in 2009, which forced him to step back from the work he loved.

In his youth, Jimmy showcased his athletic talents on the football field at Cottonwood High School. His prowess was such that a professional career seemed within reach, but the allure of the land called him back. Despite this, Jimmy remained a sports enthusiast, his loyalty unwavering to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Team. His enjoyment of the game was matched only by his love for Westerns and cartoons, which brought joy and laughter into his home.

Jimmy is survived by his son, Marko Pearson, who will cherish the memory of his father's strength and guidance. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Taylor Williams, Nailah Williams, Terrance Williams, Alex-Zandria Butler, Trinity Butler, and Kynnedy Dixon. He is also remembered by his siblings, Eddie Ash (Alisha) and Ray Charles Ash, and his sister, Shirley Ash. His nephew Charles Ash (Melissa), along with nieces Brooke Ash and Brandi Jones (Artez), will hold onto the legacy of his kindness. He leaves behind his cousin, Gabby (Greg) McNair. Jimmy's life was further enriched by the companionship of special friends Bobby Carroll and Harvey Knight, among a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by his generosity and helpful spirit.

Described by those who knew him best as generous, handy, and kind, Jimmy's ability to fix almost anything was only surpassed by his willingness to lend a hand. He lived by the credo that a neighbor in need was a friend indeed, and he often went out of his way to assist others, whether it was sharing his agricultural knowledge or offering a listening ear.

Jimmy's life was a testament to the values of hard work, community, and the simple pleasures that make a life well-lived. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment to his land, his love for his family, and his generous spirit. As we bid farewell to a man who was truly the salt of the earth, we take comfort in knowing that the lessons he taught us, the memories we shared, and the love he gave will continue to grow and flourish, just like the crops he tended with such care.

Jimmy Lee Ash's life will be celebrated and remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As the seasons change and the fields, he once worked begin to yield their harvest, we will be reminded of his enduring presence and the indelible mark he has left on our hearts and the land he cherished so deeply.

A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held at 11am on Friday, November 8, 2024, in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Jimmy will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
