She grew up in the Deanwood area of Washington, D.C. As the eldest female of twelve siblings; she learned very early the values of working for a living.Joan was educated within the D.C. public school system and continued on to college thereafter. Sometime later; she began her federal career with the Departments of Commerce and the Army to include the Federal Aviation Administration. Based on her work assignments; she was able to travel to many different countries ultimately retiring in Alabama. On January 1, 2002, Joan retired as a Civil Service Employee after an impressive forty-one plus years of honorable service. Upon retirement; she accompanied her husband to Germany from February 11, 2002 to October 2009 and returned to Dothan, Alabama upon his retirement December 12, 2010.Joan wore many hats, not just a devoted mother and grandmother, she was a role model, a loved and trusted friend to various people, young and old, as well as a devoted wife to her husband of 37 years. She was honest but not rude, passive when necessary but sustained her independence, respectful to others, and a highly valued worker. She always helped a person in need, regardless of their relationship. She was always someone’s angel in disguise. She also made sure that these same values that were instilled in her were instilled in her children, and stressed that those same values were to be passed on to her three surviving grandchildren. The importance of a family bond was something very dear to her. Even with the distance separating her from her siblings, many nieces and nephews, and sometimes not only her children and grandchildren, but her husband as well, Joan made sure to remain in constant contact with everyone that she held dear to her heart. Her mantra was, "If you can’t trust family, then who can you trust?"Not only was family important to her, but so were her hobbies. She was an experienced seamstress, an exquisite cook, and a collector of many things to include snowglobes, Barbie Dolls, and DVDs. She also enjoyed listening to the soothing sounds of Motown, Lloyd Bennett, Elvis Presley, the Platters, etc, which made her even more of a gem to be around. She savored every second of her life and she left an imprint on everyone that she touched. Her grace will be unmatched, her style will forever be her own, her wit will never be forgotten, and her wisdom will be missed by many. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
