Joann Mcgowan Futrell

February 24, 1928 — November 8, 2013

JoAnn McGowan Futrell, 85, of Dothan, passed away Friday, November 8, 2013 at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2 pm Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jim Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1pm until 2pm Sunday. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36303.

Mrs. Futrell was born February 24, 1928 in Geneva, Alabama to her parents James Curtis and Vallie Jones McGowan. She was the sixth child of twelve children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Frank Futrell, and seven brothers and sisters, Louise Roney, Mary Nell Martin, Martha Sue Carr, Janie Hatcher, Albert McGowan, Franklin McGowan, and James Henry McGowan.

During her lifetime JoAnn lived in Montgomery for fifty years, returning to Dothan in the year 2000. She joined a needlepoint group and needlepointed Christmas stockings and other items for her family. JoAnn touched the lives of many beautiful people and will be missed by those who knew and associated with her. She was active in several heredity organizations including The Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Daughters of American Colonists, The Magna Charta Dames and Barons and other organizations. JoAnn was a member of First United United Methodist Church and the Kay Williams Sunday School class.

Survivors include her sisters Margaret Ruth Carr, Edith Bennett, and Linda Bowdoin George; a brother J.C. McGowan, Jr.; she is also survived by many beautiful, talented and outstanding nieces and nephews, all of whom she was very proud and cherished.
