John D. Farmer, Jr., 83, of Dothan went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 at Flowers Hospital.
Services will be 1 pm Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Kummel Fleming officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Wake from 6-8 pm on Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Farmer was born Dec. 26, 1928 in Helena, AR and lived there the early part of his life. He attended Catholic School prior to joining the U.S. Army in 1943. He was a Veteran of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and retired in 1987 while stationed in Ft. Stewart, GA, having served more than 33 years. Mr. Farmer resided in Miami, FL for 23 years prior to moving to Dothan in 1996. He was a 32 degree Mason, Past Master and a Shriner. He was a member of Center Missionary Baptist Church in Newville, AL where he served as senior Deacon.
He is preceded in death by his father the late John D Farmer Sr., his mother Hester Mayfield, his wife of 42 years Florence Mitchell, and his brothers Ivory Carter, Robert and James Farmer.
Survivors include his wife Bessie Knight Farmer; his son David Leon Marlene Farmer; his daughters Lisa Ann Umphrey Jackson and Karen Lynn Farmer; grandchildren, Umphrey Jackson, Jessica Florence Jackson, John D. Jackson, Benjamin Matthew Jackson, Chanel Jackson, Angelica Jackson, and John David Farmer; great-grandchildren, Anthony Brown, Arianna Tripplett, Robert Daniels, Gianna Neely, Annayah Jackson, Brenden Jackson, John D. Jackson, Jr., Khamren Jackson, Aiyanna Jean-Pierre, Aaron Jean-Pierre, and Lauryn Jackson; step-sons, Danny E. Knight, Marcus V.Sheryl Nichols, and Tarrence S. Nichols; a step-daughter Jane E. Robert Gordon; a brother Percy Dorothy Farmer; his sisters, Algloria Farmer, Clarice Duval, Evelyn Farmer, and Sister-in-law Beulah Carter; several nieces and nephews.
