SCPO John Edward West USN Ret, 68, of Dothan passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at his residence.
Memorial services will be held 1 pm Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL, 36303.
Mr. West was born December 17, 1944 in Thomaston, GA. He was a 1963 graduate of Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus, GA and a member of the Muscogee County Police Department from 1968-1970. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1963 and served for 2 years and enlisted again in 1972 and served until his military retirement in 1993. He later owned and operated Chief's Construction in Cordele, GA from 1995-2002. He was a member of the Cordele Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in starting the Warwick Grits Festival in Cordele. Mr. West was a member of Masonic Lodge 296 in Cordele and Lodge 105 in Puerto Rico. He moved to Dothan in 2004 and loved cooking, reading, and writing. He also loved gardening, fishing, playing softball, and home building.
Survivors include his daughters, Julie West of Jacksonville, FL, and Tracy Stanley and her husband Todd of Herndon, VA; grandchildren, Amanda, Emily and Austin; great-grandchildren, Madison and Asher.
